My first game was v Tranmere in about 1942. Wrexham
won 7-3. George Payne the Tranmere goalkeeper was
injured early on and played on hardly being able to
walk. My grandfather used to take me to the home
games at that time. I was a 5 year old and he used
to lift me over the low red rail that ran around the
pitch and I would sit on the grass to watch the game
while he went and stood with his mates. The players
who I remember from those days were goalkeepers
Whitelaw and Frank (Tiger) Williams, Eddie Tunney,
Gib Bellis, Billy Tudor, Tommy Gardner who later
kept pubs in Marford and Rossett years. Later, my
grandparents used to offer lodgings to Wrexham
players during the Ken Barnes era. They had the
likes of Ron Barnes, Elfed Morris and Roy Thurnham
stay with them. The enjoyment that Wrexham FC has
given me over the past 60+ years cant be equalled
and lets just hope they avoid the drop to the
Conference this year. Lets hope too that the glory
days return to the Racecourse soon.

God knows what but I was just surfing the net and
reminiscing when I saw an appeal you made on
Toffeeweb for info on Eddie Tunney. I'm only a year
late but here goes, just in case...
I got to know Eddie when I started covering Tranmere
Rovers reserve team for the Birkenhead News as an
aspiring schoolboy journalist in the mid 1980s.
Eddie used to be a sort of assistant and confidante
of the then Tranmere reserve manager, a wizzened old
Scot called Alec Muir. Eddie and I used to chat on
the coaches to away games. He seemed to have a very
keen eye for players and Muir respected his
opinions. I really enjoyed chatting to him. I
learned he had played for Everton and Wrexham but he
never used to brag about it. I think someone else on
the coach told me he was an ex-pro. He was a really
lovely bloke. I imagine he probably passed away a
long time ago, but just in case you were still
interested I thought I'd get in touch.
Regards,
John Troup.
